If you had asked me to predict the outcome of last weeks game, I would have not said it would be a dominating performance. I would have believed a tight game with either team squeaking out a win. The fact that we dominated PSU on both sides of the ball was shocking (and most welcome) to say the least!

One has got to ask, who is this offensive line which showed and dominated a PSU Dline with 5-6 NFL caliber players? More importantly, where has this line been all year and will the come back to play again this year? Pryor also showed restraint in his decision making and didn't put us in danger to lose the game.

Heyward treated the PSU Oline like ragdolls for the entire game. They couldn't get any rhythm established. The secondary (especially Chekwa) held everyone in place.

Really there are no complaints about this outstanding effort. The only issues come after the game. Pryor was a little too smug in the post game interview. Sure a little cockiness is good in a QB, but a) he hasn't earned it and b) he is way too full of himself. We won the game partly because he played within himself and partly because there wasn't tremendous pressure on him the whole game. Before we get carried away with ourselves, let us remember we have been way too inconsistent on offense to allow ourselves to think we have arrived. Just like in the Purdue game, we can have ups and downs through the course of the season. Last time I checked, Iowa still has their defense intact and 4 turnovers from one cocky QB could end another day for us. In addition, UM isn't a cake walk, as it is a rivalry game and will be desperation for RichRod who will be trying to save his job.

Sure, we may have gotten back on the track to our winning ways, but the verdict is still out whether we have twisted the Ginn...

While I sit here in my Hotel in Taiwan waiting for my cab, I reflect on last weekend's game. Even the distant I've traveled to get here can't dull the pain associated with the Ohio State offense. Yes, the game was wrapped up by halftime and the scrubs came in for the second half. But few good outcomes happened:

1) Pryor is 50% of our problem, he still isn't fluid and is still learning the game (nothing new here).

2) When Bauserman played the second half, it was painful to see how bad the offensive line really is. They are at least 50% of the problem as well. Face it, Pryor covers up a lot of the O line's issues. They don't run block well and make way too many mental errors. A good QB doesn't stand a chance playing behind them.

3) We really do have some excellent receivers. If we can get them the ball, Posey and Carter can and will deliver for years to come. Posey has some excellent after catch moves and Carter has incredible hands.

We need to overcome the poor decision makings of Pryor, pray for some O line protection and hope to get our receivers the ball to hope for a chance to beat PSU...

Sorry gotta catch a cab for a nice relaxing 24 hour trip....

Go Bucks!

Well, the season is officially over for most Buckeye fans. We still have the Big11 to play for and it somehow seems hollow. Most people thought we would reload like USC or Florida does and the way the Defense was playing early on, it appeared to be so. After last weekends complete and utter collapse, its now a Rebuilding cause for next year. If Gibson (big if) stays, we'll have 18 returning starters next year and may be back in the hunt.

We'll start with the biggest surprise, the defense didn't come to play. Hand it to Purdue, they had a quarterback who could throw on the run and they spread the offense out. Our defense just looke tired and couldn't close on the Purdue play makers. Make no mistake, every remaining foe will try to do the same thing to us and some might suceed.

The offensive line might have well not even taking the field, they were letting everything get by them. Our running game never really got off the ground (Purdue was daring us to pass) and Pryor made some bad decisions. Until Pryor can learn to throw and make good choices, we will face this against every team we play. Every ome thought we were getting an improved version of Troy Smith and so far all we got is another Steve Bellisari.

Tressel's refusal to bench Pryor for even a series and unwillingness to say anything negative about Pryor suggests that kid gloves need to be used when addressing him. He's more a prima dona than a player and that is apparent. We can't light a fire under him to motivate and have to wait for him to develop. The biggest question is do we have the patience and the answer is we have to. Tressel has thrown his lot with this kid and we have to take it for the next 2 years. He does have the potential to be something special and we have to wait for it.

The offensive line is as much to blame as Pryor is for our 92/119 offensive ranking. Adams and Shugarts don't appear to have a grasp on the basics of blocking. I'm tired of ranting about how Bollman needs to go, but whatever he is teaching them isn't working and something has to change. We are getting 4 star recruits every year on the Oline and have little to show for it.

Finally, there is no chemistry or emotion on the offense. I don't see Pryor as a leader (to much into himself) . Theres no decision to suceed at any cost and we are not imrpoving (regressing actually) on offense,

There's too much to fix in order for us to have an offense which even resembles Northwestern's.

The game against Illinois was impressive because of two items: the shutout on the defensive side and the apparent emergence of a running game with excellent blocking by the offensive line. Prior to the start of the season, pundits were citing the explosiveness of the Illinois offense and how they could be the sleeper team in the Big 10. They were a sleeper team, the played like they were asleep. I think the overall performance was more indicative of the play of an obviously lost team. They played mistake proned uninspired ball on both sides.

If the defense continues to play as it has, we have a chance of going far for the rest of the season and actually making a BCS bowl as Big Ten Champions. If the offensive line continues to block as it did last weekend, we could make a lot of noise nationally. There were a lot of good things that happened especially considering everyone in the stadium knew we were going to run the ball in that inclimate weather and Illinois couldn't stop us from doing it. The execution was there even if it probably had more to do with Illinois not showing up to play. Pryor did what he had to in those conditions and didn't make too many mistakes. It was a good building opportunity for his confidence.

In mainstream TV, a colloquialism has been coined, "jump the shark", when a TV series has some event which occurs where the show loses its novelty or intrigue and takes a turn for the worse never to be the same. It was originally coined in reference to the Happy Days episode where Fonze jumped a shark while on water skis (www.jumptheshark.com). Happy Days was never the same again.

I really have begun to wonder whether OSU football is past it prime and we have "jumped the shark" and taken a turn for the worse? Prior to the 2OT victory over Miami for the National Championship in 2002, I never dreamed of going to the Natty. My main concern was winning the Big 10 and beating Michigan. I was content with the latter more then the former. I guess all those years of being really really good under Cooper only to have it viciously taken away from me at the hands of UM jaded me into this. Even going into the National Championship Game, I was convinced we didn't stand a chance and was content with the victory over hated UM. When we won the Natty in the fashion that we did, it awoke something more monstrous in me, a will to win it every year. That became the expectation especially considering Tress' great success over UM. We need to keep it in perspective on how hard it is to actually make it to the National Championship and how special it is that we are winning as many games/year as we are. The novelty of getting there and enjoying has rubbed off for most fans (including myself) and we need to realize what we have at this moment since we may not have it any longer.

As far as the point where we "jumped the shark", it has to be immediately after that touchdown run of Ted Ginn's in the National Championship game against Florida in 2007 where he was jumped on by a teammate and twisted his ankle while celebrating his score, we basically "twisted the Ginn". Up to that point, OSU football was respected, expected and did win. Tressel was the "best big game" coach in the country. OSU fans were in seventh heaven and expected this year in and year out. Six more big game losses to top 5 opponents and we are not the same by any means. Nationally the Big 10 is the laughing stock of all college football and Tress is under fire because of his ultraconservative ways. The program appears to be on the decline and is at greater risk of being canceled. For now, suffice it say we've twisted the Ginn.

Well we survived a potential let down after last week's heart breaking loss. This game provided just about everything we needed to help us feel better about the Buckeyes for this year. Terrelle Pryor had some shaky decision making but in the end had the type of game we were hoping to see every week. The Defense was spectacular and actually made some stops when it mattered. Unfortunately, the running game isn't there again this year.

I'll start with the Defense, since that is the easiest to cover. They were flying all over the place and really dominated a very good Toledo offense. The Toledo QB couldn't get any rhythm and their running game was nonexistent. Overall, I've been really impressed with the play of our corners over the last few games. They performed much better then I expected. The D line is ferocious this year and I retract any earlier comments about them being a weakness.

It's broken record time. Our offensive line is yet again offensive. We have let inferior teams D line push us around. We have no game up the middle and we lack a decent running back to compensate for this atrocity. This seems to be a staple for any Tressel team I can think of in years past. The only logical solution is to lose Bollman. This guy is worthless and Tress has to get rid of him. We have recruited some of the best O linemen in the country the last few years and have nothing to show for it. There is no reason why we shoiuld be performing so poorly on offense other then we do not have a good ground attack and it starts at the the point of attack. Even supposedly revamped this year and leaner and meaner we seem to be same old same old.

Pryor seemed shaky in his decision making until he finally tucked it and ran it for 44 yards in the 3rd quarter. I think that really enabled him to take control of the offense and make better decisions. This game had to be a confidence builder for him and hopefully he can blossom from it. I still think he is thinking too much and needs to just relax.

Bottom line is we will not win any championships until we have a balanced offense. Pryor has shown he can not shoulder the responsibility for winning games for us. We are basically a one dimensional team with some "X" dimension sprinkled in. We can pass the ball and have that Pryor "X" dimension for when things breakdown. Until we can establish a running attack which starts with the O line, we will be beatable by teams with disciplined defenses because they just need to shut Pryor down and get in his head. Unfortunately, I will probably be cutting and pasting this last paragraph for each of my posts for the rest of the year. In fact I've probably already been doing this as this is a broken record.

Illinois always gives us fits and as long as Ben and Juice are healthy we could be in for a long day on Saturday. Illinois had a bye week, so they'll be ready to give us something special. Hopefully the Troy Smith version of Pryor shows up and not the Steve Bellisari version.

The Buckeyes bid for a third straight national championship loss were ended last Saturday evening by Penn State. You just had the feeling after the first half that this game was going to come down to a single play and it surely did. Unfortunately that play went against the Buckeyes. It really was a great game and we can be upset, but not that upset. It wasn't the blow out we've seen on national TV that we've repeatedly seen.

We do have a trend to report and this should be a message to all teams out there, our defense is back. Where the heck did Thaddeus Gibson come from? He was a force in the first half. The supposedly balanced PSU offense lost the battle of the trenches and their "special" players didn't do I thing in this game. Their trio of talented WR were held in check by our secondary. I'd say the defense we thought we'd have all year is finally here to stay.

Unfortunately for us the offensive line woes continue to keep us from being a national power. This same group for the most part has not lived up to its elite status. Face it, we need to get new people in the mix and just move on taking the lumps in the process.

I still feel playing Pryor now will reap its benefits in the long term. His fumble did cost us the game, but we weren't really dominant in the trenches anyway on offense. We have to take the lumps, and wait for him to get better. Wells looks mediocre sue to his foot injury. Sure the line wasn't opening huge holes, but if Wells is the best back in the country, he finds holes from nothing. PSU had the correct gameplan for us. Force us to pass the ball and we didn't respond. This exploited Pryor as a Freshman and shut down our whole offense. I am still befuddled by the lack of a true deep threat receiver. Sanzenbacher and Small did have good games. Albeit you can see why Small drives the coaching staff crazy, he's going to get burned sometime with his special team play.

Reality is that we did have a favorable schedule last year and our team overachieved. We now see that this team wasn't destined for a national championship, but still has some work to do. This year was a disappointment and we need to move onward. A trip to the Rose Bowl may be exactly what this team needs to get us back on track. Of course, if we end up against USC again, it may be another rough outing. Not sure if we'll get Wells back, but if he trully wants the Heisman trophy and wants to improve his draft status (which may be at a low now), he'll come back.

Well folks its the halfway mark for this season and so far the Buckeyes haven't lived up to their potential! This last game against Purdue just emphasized what we've been discussing this whole year.

Offensive Line was offensive. Granted their were some plays where I saw holes big enough for a Mack truck to drive through (and Pryor optioned not to give Wells the ball), but there were too many missed blocks. Rehring in particular looked bad. The line has been shifted around a lot this year due to poor play and the lack of cohesion is evident from these switches. To make matters worse, super freshmen Shugarts and Brewster are out for the next few games at least (Shugarts for the year probably).

No spark in the offense. Neither Pryor or Wells had good games. We're basically down to Wells as the only productive back. Please keep Mo Wells out of any more games. He is worthless. Hopefullty Saine (hamstring) and Herron (concussion) are able to come back. But neither back has wowed me this year. Pryor is showing that he is a true freshman. I was hoodwinked into thinking he was Superman, but he is Superman with a conscious. He's just thinking too much on the field. He's a perfectionist and that has kept him from being anything but perfect. He just needs to commit and not second guess it. If he continues to play this way the next few games, we'll be stuck with Boeckman (and he has no problem chucking the ball into double coverage). I swear I saw the slightest smirk on Boeckman's face when they pained to him during Pryor's troubles against Purdue. I'm still waiting for the spark from a speedy receiver. Bottom line is either you have speed or you dont and, folks, we ain't got it.

Defense finally played like the defense we've been expecting all year. Maybe the light finally turned on for the D Line and we have turned the corner. If so, then we will have a good couple of games. Unfortunately, I think it's not. We lost Wilson for the season. With Rose filling in the gap, you can expect that light to dim significantly. We'll need the same performances out of the secondary we just saw for the remainder if the year to have any hope of coming out of the next 2 games alive. We also need to hear more from Lauranitis. He has to show he is top 5 draft pick in these next few games.

This is the hump. Our last two ranked opponents are before us and if destiny has us repeating for a third consecutive National Championship loss, then we have to rise against MSU and PSU. If, somehow, we beat MSU convincingly and beat the media favorite Penn State, then the country will once again be forced to acknowlege us. It makes no sense that we are consistently top 5 recruiting class year in and year out and not have the ability to simply reload.

This was a quality victory over a good Wisconsin opponent and goes some way to regaining some respect nationally. Most pundits had Wisconsin as being the team to beat in the Big 10. Of course, Penn State is now the national media darling (more on that later). In spite of this victory, there still remains a few glaring issues which will keep us from reaching and/or winning the National Championship.

Pryor is the real deal. He has so much upside, its scary. The poise he showed in crunch time showed should send fear to the rest of the Big 10. He is a freshman after all. Granted he made some mistakes, but the fact he drove us down the field with the game on the line and won it on the road in Wisconsin is quite impressive.

Seeing Beanie run as he did is quite encouraging as well. One does have to worry about his overall health. He does seem to get beat up and have to play through a lot of pain.

The offensive line played better than I have seen them play all year. Still not as dominate as they should be, but better. That in itself is encouraging and hopefully the trend will continue.

Our main problem is the lack of a D line. They haven't shown any improvement and seem to be dominated by whomever we are playing. The line was a sieve through most of the game, allowing Wisconsin to move the ball at will. We won't stand a chance against a better team (such as Penn State) or any of the top 5 teams in the country. It appears that Gholstein was much more of an impact then we gave him credit. Wilson was supposed to be a worthy replacement, but hasn't seem to fill the role yet.

In addition, our receiving corp is average at best without a true burner. We have our great route runners (Robo and Hartline) and our clutch guy (Hartline), but no speedster to clear the DB's. In every game, the opposing DB's seem to have no problem staying step for step with our guys.

I just don't see us being able to keep pace with a top team. It appears more and more that the media has been correct in their assessment of the Big 10 being down the last few years and that OSU have been the recipients of this down time. Some people have said this is the best team Tressel has ever had, but it appears more and more that the 2002 team may be his best team. We just seem to be missing the hunger that that team had back then.

With any luck, Penn State will stay undefeated and we can secure a victory over them. The national media absolutely loves this team and beating them would definitely restore us to some prominence. It probably won't be enough for this year, but at least get us going in the rght direction.
